European Union member states need to increase defense outlays on a national level first, according to Irish Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe, as the bloc looks for ways to take more control of its own security.
“Our first port of call should be what we can do on a national level while maintaining financial stability and maintaining the integrity of the budget rules,” Donohoe, who also chairs meetings of euro-area finance ministers, said in an interview with Bloomberg in Cape Town. “That’s the thing we’ll be able to do the quickest.”
