Mozambique extended a value-added tax exemption on essential goods until the end of the year to ease spending pressures on consumers that have sparked violent protests in the southern African nation.

The tax break first introduced last year applies to sugar, cooking oil, and soap, as well as raw materials, equipment, and components used by the domestic sugar industry, according to a government statement.
