Hundreds of informal traders blockaded the entrance to Malawi’s parliament on Tuesday in a protest over the rising cost of living.

Lawmakers were prevented from leaving the National Assembly building in the capital, Lilongwe, where dozens of police were deployed to protect the entrance. Parliament resumed last week, and Finance Minister Simplex Banda is preparing to deliver his annual budget speech on Friday.
