The Cook Islands said it has formalized cooperation pacts with China, including an action plan for a comprehensive strategic partnership and an agreement covering exploration for seabed minerals.
The agreements, signed by the South Pacific nation during a recent government-level visit to China, come amid increasing strategic rivalry in the region between the Asian superpower and the US, and with American allies such as Australia.
