What Is the Treasury Payment System DOGE Wants to Control?
Elon Musk’s mission to shrink the size of the US government has put a spotlight on an obscure federal office whose work directly touches nearly every American. The US Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service processes billions of payments worth trillions of dollars each year, acting as the central clearinghouse for almost everything the federal government spends money on, from Social Security payments and veterans benefits to grants for state governments. As such, BFS has become a focal point for Musk and his efforts to cut federal spending without Congressional involvement through his task force, the Department of Government Efficiency.
Weeks into Trump’s second presidency, DOGE personnel successfully gained partial access to BFS payment systems that house millions of people’s sensitive personal data. A court has since temporarily blocked their access. But Musk and his affiliates have indicated their intention to stop certain federal payments by exerting control over BFS systems, raising concerns about the security of Americans’ personal financial information and the implications of one unelected man deciding what the government spends money on.
