German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and conservative frontrunner Friedrich Merz effectively ruled out serving together in the same cabinet, whatever the outcome of Sunday’s election.

Social Democrat Scholz and Merz, who heads the center-right CDU/CSU bloc, briefly coincided during a live Q&A with voters on Monday evening. A moderator for public broadcaster ARD asked them if they could envisage being in the same government after the ballot that opinion polls suggest Merz will win comfortably.
