Germany’s highest-ranking soldier said the country urgently needs to bolster defense spending and expand its military ranks to counter Russian aggression and help reduce reliance on the US.

Speaking as leaders gathered for the three-day Munich Security Conference, Bundeswehr Chief of Defense Carsten Breuer said US President Donald Trump’s phone call with Russia’s Vladimir Putin announcing peace talks — and blindsiding European allies — doesn’t in any way mitigate the threat posed by the Kremlin.
