Chinese authorities defended the quality of homegrown generic medicines after groups of doctors complained of their efficacy compared with brand name drugs made by western pharmaceutical giants.

The health watchdog said conclusions on the performance of the local generic medicines in question should be drawn from rigorous tests and scientific studies instead of anecdotal evidence of patients not responding well, according to an interview with state media.
