John Schulman, a prominent artificial intelligence researcher who co-founded OpenAI, has left rival firm Anthropic, a job he held since the summer.

Schulman — who has been credited as one of the leading architects of ChatGPT — departed OpenAI in August for competitor Anthropic. At the time, Schulman said that he was joining Anthropic to focus more deeply on AI alignment — meaning the adherence of AI to humans’ interests — and planned to return to “hands-on technical work.”
