The UK government said it wouldn’t provide any details on a proposed multibillion-pound deal to continue operating a military base in the Chagos archipelago once it cedes control of the islands until it’s finalized, provoking private criticism within Keir Starmer’s cabinet.
“We have never gone into the details of the deal,” Starmer’s spokesman Tom Wells said when asked about remarks by Mauritius Premier Navinchandra Ramgoolam to the nation’s parliament suggesting that payments from the UK would effectively double.
