The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been gripped for years by conflict that’s caused the deaths of millions of people and left multitudes displaced. The start of 2025 marked an escalation, as rebels aligned with Rwanda seized the key Congolese trading hub of Goma, threatening to trigger an all-out confrontation between the two central African nations.

Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, who accuses his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame of supporting the M23 militants, said his government was preparing to respond and warned of “unpredictable consequences.” Kagame denied involvement and said Tshisekedi’s inability to control events in his own country put Rwanda’s security at risk.
