Last year’s jump in European power trading activity is poised to continue in 2025, driven by an increase in speculative and weather-related positions, according to an industry consultant.
The combined traded volume on the European Energy Exchange AG and in the over-the-counter market gained 45% in 2024, Icis said in a report published this week. Spain and France saw the largest gains in volume on the exchange, increasing by 350% and 160%, respectively. Activity in Germany, the biggest market by far, jumped 49% to 6,048 terrawatt-hours last year.
