The politically-charged sale of Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc.’s Polish television unit kicked off with local billionaire Michal Solowow placing a bid and a Warsaw-listed media group emerging as a potential suitor.

The unit, TVN SA, has been at the center of Polish politics for years, with the country’s previous nationalist cabinet attempting to force its US owners to cede control. While that plan failed, the threat of a leading broadcaster falling into the wrong hands has pushed Poland’s current pro-European administration to seek a role in deciding who buys the asset.
