A majority of workers at a Whole Foods Market store in Philadelphia voted to join the United Food and Commercial Workers International union, giving organized labor a new foothold at parent company Amazon.com Inc.

The employees voted 130-100 in favor of the union on Monday. Union advocates said they want higher wages, better medical benefits and worker protection. About 300 employees at the location were eligible to vote, including butchers, bakers, cooks, dishwashers and those who fulfill online orders. The UFCW has about 1.2 million members in supermarkets, pharmacies, meat packing plants and other industries.
