Bitterly cold weather from New York to the US South will start to moderate by this weekend after straining power grids, snarling transportation and bringing snow to the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
In Manhattan, readings will approach 40F (4C) this weekend from 18F on Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. In Houston, readings will swing from 33F to 64F over the same time frame.
