Epic Games’ ‘Fortnite’-Based Roblox-Killer Still Has a Way to Go

  • Company paid out $352 million to independent game creators
  • Developers say its hard to compete with Epic’s own content

Epic Games Inc., publisher of the wildly successful Fortnite video game, launched an initiative two years ago to take on industry leader Roblox Corp. in the fast-growing business of user-generated games.

Epic gave third-parties a chance to make their own games within the Fortnite universe, using its Unreal Editor for Fortnite game-making tools. Much like at Roblox, the creators get a share of in-game sales as a reward for their efforts.
