More than two centuries of British control over the Chagos islands are set to end, with the UK preparing to hand ownership of the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius.

A deal was agreed in October under which the UK would pay Mauritius an annual fee in exchange for the right to continue operating a military base there that it shares with the US.
