Downing Street insisted Prime Minister Keir Starmer has a “great relationship” with his Spanish counterpart, after Pedro Sanchez threatened to impose a 100% tax on sales of homes to buyers from outside the European Union.

Spain is suffering from a housing crisis that Sanchez has blamed on foreigners speculating over price increases by snapping up properties at the expense of locals. Britons are the most common foreign buyers of Spanish homes, particularly in holiday hot-spots around the Mediterranean coast.
