Buybacks Made Japanese Companies Biggest Stock Buyers of 2024

Japanese corporations bought a record amount of domestic stocks last year, becoming the biggest buyer of equities as they carried out aggressive share repurchases.

Companies made net purchases of ¥7.9 trillion ($50 billion) of shares, data from the Tokyo Stock Exchange shows. Net buying by foreign investors was just ¥154 billion in 2024, as they pulled back sharply after the market rout in August.
