Ukraine will ease its ban on dual citizenship in an attempt to tackle a demographic crisis sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion.

A bill allowing dual citizenship passed its first reading in Ukraine’s parliament on Tuesday and is now pending final approval. It was initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy after consultations with diaspora organizations and will define cases where dual citizenship is permitted, including for children born to Ukrainian parents abroad and Ukrainians who obtain other citizenships by marriage.
