The UK government set aside £75 million ($96 million) for gay veterans who suffered decades of homophobic abuse in the British military, a 50% increase on previously-planned compensation.
LGBT veterans who were discharged or dismissed because of their sexual orientation or gender identity will be able to claim up to £70,000 each, the Ministry of Defence said on Thursday in a statement. The British military banned gay and trans people from serving in military between 1967 — when homosexuality was legalized — and 2000.
