Staying overnight for a work trip is getting more expensive for companies.

Some companies that were accustomed to booking year-long contracts at set rates have had to break away from that old practice as the hotel industry shifted more toward pricing rooms based on demand. The new system means costs can be more unpredictable — and risk spiraling ever-higher during peak travel times.
