US Jobless Claims Drop After Jump Due to Storms in Week Prior

- Michigan filings also dropped after jumping in early October

Applications for US unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell after jumping the previous week in Southeastern states affected by Hurricane Helene, and data will probably remain volatile in the coming weeks.
Initial claims decreased by 19,000 to 241,000 in the week ended Oct. 12. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for 259,000 applications.
