A heat wave in eastern China prompted warnings in Shanghai and pushed another major city, Hangzhou, to a record as extreme weather continues to sweep across the country.
Shanghai issued its highest heat wave alert for the second time this week, forecasting that temperatures in parts of the Pudong district will exceed 40C (104F). The city of about 25 million people, a key hub for commerce and shipping, issued its first red heat alert of the year on Thursday after temperatures reached a similar level.
