Brussels Pivots From Horse-Drawn Carriages to Electric

While other cities have struggled to address animal-welfare concerns, the Belgian capital finds its new way forward has origins in the 1830s.

The new offering in the center of Belgium’s capital is part of a shift away from horse-drawn buggies to electric vehicles.

Hop into a carriage at the Grand Place in Brussels and visitors will see centuries-old architecture, gothic-style churches and picturesque shops lining cobblestone streets.

One thing they will not see on that carriage ride today: horses. Or their manure fouling the streets.
