For almost two decades, Elon Musk has told a story about Tesla. It involves developing luxury electric cars that appeal to wealthy environmentalists, and using the proceeds from the sales of those vehicles to make a car everyone can afford. In what Musk described in 2006 as the “secret Tesla Motors master plan,” he said the company would “enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium, and then drive down-market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model.”
