Boeing Co. Chief Executive Officer Dave Calhoun is leaving the embattled planemaker, stepping down with the company’s chairman and head of commercial airplanes as it struggles to contain a manufacturing quality and safety crisis amid regulatory scrutiny.

Calhoun, who will leave by the end of the year, announced his departure in a letter to employees. Here is his memo:
