Diversity has become a dirty word in parts of corporate America. Almost a year after a conservative supermajority of the Supreme Court decided race can no longer be taken into account in college admissions, US companies have come under fire for their hiring policies.

Emboldened by the high court ruling and Donald Trump’s rhetoric, right-wing groups and high-profile figures from Wall Street to Silicon Valley have gone on the offensive against diversity, equity and inclusion practices, or DEI. Now some of the same companies that rushed to prove their progressive credentials in the wake of George Floyd’s murder are going quiet.
