In China, there’s a newfound love for American big-box stores: When a Costco Wholesale Corp. outlet opened in January in Shenzhen, tens of thousands of people lined up for more than three hours to enter.

Some of those customers were coming from Hong Kong, where a cross-border shopping frenzy has taken hold. A package offered by Taiwan-based travel agency KKday includes three hours of shopping time at the Costco Shenzhen store. Those who join the tour group get a Costco membership card valid for all of its locations worldwide, a night in a five-star hotel and three buffets for HK$608 ($78).
