Europe’s 11 Historical Sites Most at Risk, From Famed Greek Islands to an Ancient Armenian Fort
For more than a decade groups have sought to protect important sites under threat, whether from demolition and redevelopment, neglect, over-exploitation or warfare.

An Italian synagogue, a Polish palace, a Belgian market hall and a string of Greek holiday islands are among 11 historic sites shortlisted for a 2024 ranking of the European monuments most at risk of damage and destruction.
Compiled by heritage group Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute, the Seven Most Endangered Program has since 2013 sought to protect European heritage under threat, whether from demolition and redevelopment, neglect, over-exploitation or warfare. This year’s list suggests that the survival of some sites in their current form is by no means guaranteed.
