Residential Utility Debt Tops US Record as Energy Prices Climb

US household utility debt is at a record high as more Americans struggle to cope with rising heating and cooling costs.

More than one out of every six ratepayers are behind on energy bills, the National Energy Assistance Directors Association said in a report Tuesday. On a national scale, the residential utility debt swelled by $2.5 billion to $20.3 billion last year.
