In Denmark’s first abdication in nearly 900 years, Queen Margrethe II on Sunday made way for her son, who assumed the royal moniker King Frederik X.

The queen signed a declaration of abdication at 2 p.m. at Christiansborg Palace in central Copenhagen. An hour later, in a ceremony on the palace’s balcony, Frederik was proclaimed as king by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, witnessed by jubilant crowds below.
