Slate, the online magazine and podcast publisher owned by Graham Holdings Co., acquired the Death, Sex & Money podcast from New York public radio station WNYC.

The purchase announced Thursday follows a tumultuous year for the podcasting business in general and particularly those funded by noncommercial media outlets. After a swath of cancellations, layoffs and tightening budgets, shows are moving to new corporate parents or going solo in an attempt to make their economics work.

“Slate is an ideal home for Death, Sex & Money,” said Alicia Montgomery, vice president of audio for Slate. “Both teams are driven to explore the complicated issues that animate our lives with intelligence, candor, humor and compassion.”
