The US Securities and Exchange Commission’s Jan. 10 approval of about a dozen spot-Bitcoin ETFs has—after years and years, and then a hack of the SEC’s X account—finally determined which issuers will launch. Now a new race to win the category officially begins. “We’ll know the winner by the end of March,” Balchunas says. “There can be only one big winner, but there’s still room for a decent middle class.” Watch the trading volumes more than assets under management, he says. That will indicate the preferences of institutional investors such as pensions and endowments. Early odds favor BlackRock’s IBIT for its massive distribution, he says, but Cathie Wood’s ARKB will appeal to the crypto crowd; a fee war between the two began even before regulatory approval.
