UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron said China had become “more aggressive and assertive” in recent years, arguing “a lot has changed” since he had pursued a warm relationship with Beijing as prime minister.

Cameron listed China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang province and its crackdown on free speech in Hong Kong as reasons for a more skeptical stance in the West, while insisting it was right to continue to “engage” with the Asian nation on policy areas like climate change and artificial intelligence, because it represented “a fifth of humanity.”
