The rapid expansion of renewable energy means global emissions could top out as early as this year, according to climate researchers.
A surge in new wind and solar installations could outstrip growth in energy demand for the first time, causing fossil fuel consumption to start falling, Climate Analytics said in a report published Wednesday. If that trend continues, there is a 70% chance emissions will hit a peak this year, the institute said.
