Taiwanese Vice President Lai Ching-te, who is also the ruling Democratic Progressive Party’s candidate for president, sat for an exclusive interview with Bloomberg Businessweek Editor Joel Weber at the Presidential Office in Taipei on July 27.

The following is a lightly-edited transcript of that conversation, in which Lai discussed among other things tensions with China, ties with the US and the future of Taiwan’s chip industry. While Lai’s first answer was in English, he delivered his other responses in Chinese.
