Bill Gurley, who made a fortune off an early bet on Uber Technologies Inc., is no longer an active investor with his venture capital firm Benchmark. Which is one reason he now lives in Austin, Texas. But for anyone looking to start a technology company, Silicon Valley is still the place, Gurley said.

On the latest episode of The Circuit With Emily Chang, I met Gurley in downtown Austin. I’d expected he’d tell me that California had lost its shine. Since the pandemic, there’s been quite the debate over whether the Bay Area is still the best place to start a company. Gurley’s view on that hasn’t changed.
