Air quality alerts are covering a large swath of the US from Iowa to Maine, including New York, as smoke from Canadian wildfires billows south for another day.

In Manhattan, air quality deteriorated to “unhealthy for sensitive groups” early Thursday before rebounding to moderate levels, AirNow.gov shows. People who are unusually sensitive to particle pollution are urged to consider limiting their outdoor activity. New York and Chicago can expect bad air through midnight, the National Weather Service said.
