Olivia Chow is standing in front of one of Toronto’s oldest public housing units, a gray slab building three stories tall. Facing a TV crew and reporters, she lifts her hand to eye level and curls her fingers to form a zero, peering through the hole like it’s a monocle.
“Nada,” the mayoral candidate pronounces. That’s how much progress she says has been made on improving access to Toronto housing in the last decade. Rents are surging, housing supply is low and new home buyers are wrestling with mortgage rates at multi-decade highs.
