Chattanooga Plants Quantum Seed to Stay on Cutting Edge
The Tennessee city rolled out America's first citywide gigabit internet service. Now it's set to launch the nation's first commercially available quantum network.

By the end of July, Chattanooga, Tennessee, will open the country’s first commercially available quantum network. If all goes as planned, the city would be at the forefront of a new technology that could give new-age computers the ability to quickly solve complex problems in fields like chemistry, finance and health.
One of the end goals of such networks is to allow multiple parties to exchange information using the quantum properties of photons, making the transfer of data super fast and nearly impossible to intercept. That could have major implications for the future of cybersecurity and the development of a powerful and secure quantum internet — which is key to the US government’s aims of “ushering in a new era of communications.”
