The Philippines on Monday raised the alert level on Mayon Volcano south of Manila due to “increasing unrest,” and advised the public to stay out of its six-kilometer radius danger zone.
The volcanology institute placed Mayon Volcano under Alert Level 2 in a five-step scale, as it warned that the current unrest could lead to blasts of steam “or even precede hazardous magmatic eruption.” An increase in rockfall from the volcano’s summit lava dome has been observed since late April, it added.
