France is in talks with the European Union’s presidency as it seeks assurances on the role nuclear can play in meeting clean-energy targets and producing hydrogen for industry.

The Renewable Energy Directive, aimed at scaling up renewables such as wind and solar power, has been stalled after France and other countries said they wouldn’t back the law. The legislation was struck from the agenda of a meeting of member-state officials Wednesday.
