Zanzibar, Tanzania’s semi-autonomous archipelago, signed an agreement with two companies to build its first large-scale solar power plant at a cost of $140 million.

The agreement with Mauritian-based Generation Capital Ltd. and Tanzania’s Taifa Energy to develop the 180 megawatts plant will be implemented in phases, the companies said in a joint statement. The first stage of the project will involve construction of a 30-megawatt facility to be completed in 2024.
