China Broadens What It Considers Spying in a New Espionage Law
China has passed new counter-espionage legislation expanding the list of activities that can be considered spying, as President Xi Jinping prioritizes national security concerns amid a strategic struggle with the US.
Chinese authorities detailed the legislation hours after its approval Wednesday by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, the country’s top legislative body. The law, which revises and expands legislation passed in 2014, takes effect on July 1.
