Paris voters overwhelmingly chose to ban shared electric scooters citywide in a referendum Sunday, backing city officials who said they had grown frustrated with operators’ use of public space and scooter-related accidents.

Nearly 90 percent of residents who turned out voted against allowing shared scooters, supporting the effort by mayor Anne Hidalgo, who had said she hoped to put an end to the services when she announced the referendum. The result means that the contracts for the city’s three operators, Lime, Dott and Tier, won’t be renewed when they expire on Sept. 1. The companies operate 15,000 scooters in Paris.
