Germany and six other European Union nations are fighting back against France’s efforts to count hydrogen produced using nuclear power as renewable, a major battleground in the bloc’s transition to climate neutrality.

The countries — which also include Spain, Portugal, Austria, Denmark, Ireland and Luxembourg — said that hydrogen produced using nuclear shouldn’t count toward the EU’s renewable energy targets for 2030, according to a letter seen by Bloomberg. France has been pushing for that allowance.
