They say age is just a number, and that applies to spirits just as aptly as it does to people. An old whiskey isn’t necessarily a mature one. In fact, there are plenty of expensive, ultra-aged expressions that become undrinkable after too many decades in the cask. They grow unbalanced and over-tannic at best, chaotic and cloying at worst. Here’s a look at some recent releases that were worth the wait—and maybe even the asking price.
