UK Grid Tests Reserve Coal-Power Unit as Cold Snap Persists

The UK’s National Grid Plc will run a test of one of the country’s coal-fired power generators that’s being kept in reserve to boost supplies this winter.

While mostly phased out already, plants burning the most polluting fossil fuel could serve as a vital source of backup power this winter to makeup for potential shortfalls in wind or interconnector capacity as the region struggles with its worst energy crisis in decades.
