Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pushed through legislation to allow his two nominees to be appointed to a top court, escalating tensions with the judiciary over a long-running political impasse about the selection of judges.

On Thursday, lawmakers approved a proposal to change how the judiciary’s governing council, the CGPJ, operates, paving the way for the appointment of Sanchez’s nominees to the Constitutional Court.
